Also notice that in this picture and all the others we’ve seen, Pre never ran in a Nike branded singlet as far as we know he only had the opportunity to run in a generic singlet as shown here in this replica singlet designed very similar those used by Oregon in the early ’70s. In fact, Oregon runners did not don a Nike branded (with an external logo anyway) until the later ’70s based on all the Oregon team pics we’ve seen. He wore Nike shoes but we believe he never wore a Nike singlet. If you’re a real runner, there’s no better way to be like Pre than with this new, never worn racing singlet. Prefontaine College Yearbook Tribute

Prefontaine Tribute from 1975 University of Oregon Yearbook: this is the special 2 page tribute to Steve Prefontaine from his alma mater’s 1975 University of Oregon Yearbook. This is a color professional copy of the two-page spread captured in a high quality laminate, size 12″ x 18″ and is perfect for display in a variety of venues and protected forever. The tribute features 4 Pre pictures and a picture of the scoreboard stopwatch from the Memorial Service in his honor held at his track, Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. As you likely know as a Pre fan, he was tragically lost in May of 1975, in an auto accident, taken away far too young at 24. His great college home honored him in the 1975 Oregana (U of O Yearbook). The yearbook is very hard to find and this tribute was made from an actual yearbook and laminated for display and protection and is a must for any Pre fan. Note the full-page profile photo of Pre taken just before his last race. Opposite are 3 different Pre photos from 1971, 1972 and 1973 during his Duck years, spanning his college career showing him adored by young fans who idolized him and hugging a fellow runner. The remaining photo shows the Hayward Field stop watch displayed on the scoreboard clock with 12:36.2 showing the 3-mile world record Pre sought and was the planned elapsed time for the memorial service as one last tribute to arguably America’s greatest distance runner and certainly it’s most inspirational. The accompanying text describes the photos and captures some of his spirit, covering his victory laps, the description of his death and his records. This is a great Pre memorabilia item. Go Pre!

Billy Mills Destiny Poster

At the ’64 Olympics in Tokyo Japan, American Billy Mills was completely unkown. In the final of the 10,000 meters, 4 Olympic Gold Medalists and world record holders crowded the line and stood shoulder to shoulder with Mills on the line. When the gun went and the race unfolded Mill exhibited a Pre like spirit refusing to lose, fulfilling his Olympic destiny. Though he was shoved into lane 4 coming off the final turn by Mohammed Gammoudi, Billy made up a 10 meter deficit in the final stretch. Mills cut 46 seconds off his personal record that day as he outsprinted the big names, creating what has been described by many as “the greatest sprint finish in Olympic history.” Billy Mills was the only American ever to win the Olympic 10,000 meters. Sports Illustrated Prefontaine Cover

One of the rarest and most sought after Sports Illustrateds in existence. A unique piece from Steve’s freshman year at U of O. The front cover proclaims him “America’s Distance Prodigy.” A big title to live up to; a challenge Steve gladly accepted. Front cover is a picture of Steve running in the hills along a river in Oregon. Inside on page 28 there is a four page article by Pat Putnam entitled: “The Freshman and the Great Guru… Only 19 but blessed with speed, stamina and a canny coach, Steve Prefontaine may turn out to be the best ever.” There are 3 additonal Pre photos within the article with captions: “Prefontaine led midway through the mile,” “Bowerman congratulates 19-year-old Prefontaine following his 3:57.4 mile,” and “Prefontaine obliges autograph-seekers after his dazzling run in Eugene.” The article is mostly about Pre breaking the 4 minute barrier for the first time at the 1970 Oregon alumni meet. The inside pictures are all spectacular, especially the one with Bowerman, I believe Nike actually used it for an ad campaign with their Bowerman line of running shoes. One photo shows Pre signing autographs for kids, and the 3rd (actually the first in the series) shows Pre taking the lead on the third lap. Article also gives some background on Pre, Bowerman’s eccentricities, and the lightning charged atmosphere of Eugene Oregon, track capitol USA. No Pre fan’s collection should be missing this.

As these are one of a kind items they will differ slightly from the picture but rest assured each magazine we sell is in excellent shape. A very inspiring piece, this makes a great gift for a runner (especially a young one). Please ask about availability.

Pre Cloth Poster

The photo was taken by Jeff Johnson at Hayward Field circa 1973 and was one the few times Steve Prefontaine wore his Olympic uniform. The black and white cloth poster is 4′ x 2.5′ and has one of Pre’s favorite quotes …”A lot of people run a race to see who is the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts.” The poster is printed on a sheer, soft-as-silk like material for the highest quality. It will not tear and can even be washed and ironed. You can use tacks, velcro, tape or slip into ceiling panels without damaging the poster. The poster is compact and can be taken to a meet and can be used as bandanna, flag or any other creative idea. Pictured on another panel of this panoramic folder is the Bill Bowerman bronze statue at Hayward Field. Bowerman was Pre’s mentor and the legendary coach for the Ducks and co-founder of Nike. Sports Illustrated Shorter in Leningrad Cover

Cover reads: “Upsetting Meet in Leningrad – Surprise winner Shorter consoles Russia’s Mikitenko.” Inside the article related to the cover shot is called “Don’t Drink the Water – That is the advice the U.S. track team got in Leningrad. The Yanks hated the rooms, hated the food-and most of all hated losing to the Russians for the second time,” by Pat Putnam. Pictures in the article are of javelin thrower Bill Skinner, American supporters, the men’s 200 meters, the women’s 100 meters, and national team members sightseeing. The captions for the pictures are, respectively: “A welcome surprise for the U.S. was ex-sailor Bill Skinner who came in first in the javelin, Urged on by American supporters, Willie Turner turns the corner to win the 200 meters, The biggest Russian upset came in the 100 meters as Valeri Borzov won after a fast start against Crockett and Vaughan, Sightseeing in Leningrad members of the U.S. team pause before a portrait of Lenin.” The article is about a dual meet in 1970 between the U.S. and Russian national teams, held deep in the heart of communist Russia. Frank Shorter won the 10,000 meters in 28:22.8. Many humorous comments about the accomodations and food, this magazine is a neat piece of track & field history.

Steve Prefontaine The Gift Poster

This poster was created from an image taken by photographer Jeff Johnson, famous for several of his Pre photos. It is an incredible shot of Pre breaking the tape victorious, glancing at the scoreboard clock behind the first turn at Hayward Field. Rainwater can be seen on the track, Pre’s people can be seen in the stands sharing in his elation and his victory. The quote at the top of the poster reads: “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift” One of Pre’s most famous sayings.
